Advancing Sarcoma Education for Medical Professionals
Rein in Sarcoma is committed to improving sarcoma outcomes through education. Because sarcoma is rare and often misdiagnosed, ongoing education for healthcare professionals is essential. Our educational programs are designed to support earlier recognition, informed referral decisions, and continued learning across disciplines involved in sarcoma care.
Red Flags of Sarcoma Program
Early recognition saves lives. The Red Flags of Sarcoma Program is designed to increase awareness of potential
warning signs of sarcoma and support earlier evaluation and referral. Because sarcoma is rare and symptoms can
appear subtle, education plays a critical role in reducing delays in diagnosis.
While most lumps, bumps, and bruises are not cancer, sarcoma outcomes are often improved when the disease is
identified early. This program encourages vigilance, timely assessment, and informed clinical decision making.
Key Signs to Be Aware Of
Healthcare professionals are encouraged to consider further evaluation when patients present with:
Lumps or Bumps That Are:
- Deep within the tissue
- New or increasing in size
- Approximately one to two inches or larger
- Located anywhere in the body
- Painful or painless, as not all sarcomas cause pain
Pain That:
- Is not explained by injury or overuse
- Occurs at night
- Persists despite rest or treatment
- Lasts longer than one month
When to Consider Further Evaluation
- Pain that seems disproportionate to an injury
- Pain that does not improve with standard treatment
- Asymmetry in areas of the body that should appear the same
- Discomfort or limited movement in an arm or leg
- A growing mass that may or may not be painful
Jan Maudlin Sarcoma Scholars Program
The Jan Maudlin Sarcoma Scholars Program awards annual scholarships to medical students at select Midwest
medical schools, including the University of Minnesota, Mayo Clinic, Medical College of Wisconsin, University of Iowa, and the University of Wisconsin. The program supports Rein in Sarcoma’s mission to improve sarcoma awareness and education within the medical community.

Supported by the generosity of Jan and Tim Maudlin, scholars participate in sarcoma conferences, research, and
clinical learning throughout the year. They also contribute to educational outreach by partnering with Rein in
Sarcoma committees and helping raise awareness among fellow students, healthcare professionals, and the broader community.
